Brussels Residents Adopt Green Habits Following 2025 Mobility Plan Launch
New incentives and infrastructure since last spring have driven measurable uptake in daily green habits across several neighbourhoods.
How we reported this

Brussels recorded a 28 percent increase in household composting sign-ups and a 35 percent jump in electric cargo bike registrations between January and June 2026, according to figures released by Brussels Environment last week.
The changes trace directly to the phased implementation of the city’s revised mobility plan that began in May 2025. That plan added protected cycle lanes on 47 kilometres of streets and introduced a €400 subsidy for cargo bikes purchased before the end of 2026. Rising household energy bills and the closure of several petrol stations in the city centre have made the new options more attractive than they were two years ago.
Daily routes and repair culture
Residents in Ixelles now use the widened bike path along Chaussée de Boondael to reach the weekly repair café at Place Flagey every Saturday morning. The same route connects to the new covered bicycle parking at the Etterbeek station, which opened in March and holds 1,200 spaces. In Saint-Gilles, the Marché de la Place du Jeu de Balle has added dedicated stalls for bulk refill stations that accept reusable containers brought from home.
These spots have replaced longer car trips for many households. A typical family in the area reports cutting weekly fuel costs by €18 after switching one school run and one market trip to cargo bike.
Numbers behind the habit change
Brussels Environment data show that 4,200 households joined the municipal composting programme in the first half of 2026, up from 3,280 in the same period last year. Average annual savings on waste collection fees stand at €92 for participants who use the brown bins. Cargo-bike subsidies have been claimed by 1,150 buyers so far, with the most common model priced at €2,150 before the grant.
The next step for anyone starting now is to check the Brussels Environment website for the current cargo-bike subsidy list and locate the nearest repair café through the city’s online map. Slots at the Flagey and Jeu de Balle sessions fill by 10 a.m. on weekends, so early arrival is required.
