Brussels Reshapes Transport: Decades of Delayed Rail, Metro Projects Finally Target Completion
Original timelines for major rail and metro works have shifted over time as the city adapts its transport and utility upgrades.
How we reported this
The Réseau Express Régional Bruxellois rail project, first targeted for completion in 2012, now carries a 2025 goal for 15-minute train frequencies across 120 stations. This adjustment follows repeated delays that have extended the timeline by more than a decade.
These changes reflect the practical realities of delivering complex rail improvements in a dense urban setting. Planners have had to balance construction demands with existing services, leading to revised schedules that prioritise steady progress over earlier deadlines.
Metro Line 3 and Station Refresh Efforts
Metro Line 3 is advancing as a 6km conversion of the pre-metro route between Albert and Gare du Nord, supported by a EUR 1.66 billion investment. The work upgrades central tram infrastructure into a full metro line, addressing long-standing capacity needs in that corridor.
Alongside this, the Refresh program targets several stations for accessibility upgrades. Diamant, Stokkel, Ossegem and Zwarte Vijvers are listed among the 2025 priorities. These renovations form part of broader efforts to align older stations with updated standards.
Additional activity in 2024 and 2025 includes the start of works at Magasin 4 near Tour & Taxis, revegetation of railroad embankments between Gare du Nord and Avenue de la Reine, and conversion of a former synagogue on Rue Rogier into a youth socio-cultural facility. Each project ties into ongoing urban renewal contracts that coordinate transport and community improvements.
Electricity Grid Renewal by Elia
Elia is carrying out a two-phase overhaul of the Brussels electricity grid covering the eastern and western sectors. The work replaces aging infrastructure, removes oil-filled cables and aims to maintain supply security through 2028. This programme responds to the need for reliable power delivery as other city systems modernise.
Collectively the projects illustrate how initial ambitions from the early 2010s have been refined through successive planning cycles. The focus remains on completing the outlined upgrades rather than meeting superseded dates.
Residents can track updates on individual sites through official channels as construction continues in these corridors.
