Brussels Closes City Services Two Days, Transport Keeps Running

City administrative buildings will stay shut on Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 July 2026, yet the metro, tram and bus network will continue normal operations to move residents around Brussels during the public holiday.

The closures affect the Brucity Administrative Centre and all liaison offices, with only the Deaths Service reachable by telephone on the first day. The timing coincides with peak summer travel, when many households turn to public options instead of driving into the city centre.

Core network stays open

STIB-MIVB runs the metro, tram and bus services that cover every Brussels municipality. Night buses under the Noctis brand operate on weekends, while some peripheral routes fall to TEC and De Lijn. Train services inside Belgium are handled by SNCB-NMBS, with direct international links to Paris, Amsterdam, London, Berlin and Luxembourg still listed on the respective operators’ sites.

Travellers can combine modes with Brupass tickets that cover rail, tram, bus and metro inside the 19 municipalities plus an 11.5 km radius beyond the city limits. The Waterbus service on the Senne Canal between Vilvoorde and central Brussels runs its 10-kilometre route daily from 1 May through 31 October.

Events and works ahead

Two upcoming dates stand out on the city calendar. Car Free Sunday is set for 20 September 2026, and maintenance at Bockstael station begins in August.
