Brussels Leads Global Smart Cities By Blending EU Policy With Local Tech Pilots

Brussels opened a new data-sharing platform on 10 July that lets residents track real-time air quality readings from sensors installed along the Rue Belliard and the Chaussée de Charleroi.
The move arrives as the Brussels-Capital Region prepares to spend €85 million on smart infrastructure through 2027, a figure drawn from the 2025 regional budget documents. City officials say the timing matters because new EU rules on urban data will take effect next year, forcing every member state capital to show how local projects meet stricter privacy standards.
Two programmes anchor the difference
One centre sits inside the former Tour & Taxis freight depot in the north, where the Brussels Smart Mobility Lab tests electric-shuttle routing software used by the STIB transport authority. A second site operates from the basement of the BeCentral co-working space near Brussels Central station, where teams build open-source tools that let small businesses report noise complaints directly to municipal dashboards. Both locations run on the same data protocol, something few other cities have achieved at this scale.
Internal project logs show the platform has already processed 1.2 million sensor readings since its soft launch in March. That volume exceeds the first-year totals reported by comparable pilots in Amsterdam and Barcelona, according to a June comparison circulated among regional administrators.
What comes next for residents and firms
From 1 September the platform will accept submissions from any registered Brussels company that wants to test new sensors on public lampposts. Firms must first complete a two-page compliance form available at the city’s digital portal. Residents who download the companion app can set alerts for their own postcode and receive weekly summaries without sharing personal location history.
